I'm pointing you to a fantastic blog entry by Jonathan Salem Baskin over at FutureLab titled, "Possibilities, Not Necessities" that really, really gets to the core of the apple on where we truly stand with respect to incremental "innovation" and true innovation.  Bottom line...true innovation hasn't yet arrived.  But the fact that he is bringing it up shows there is a need.  Anyone want to start developing new products/services that people really need instead of want?!?!  Enjoy!
