Doers vs. Dreamers

Just returned from a wonderful week at DisneyWorld.  All of us have that special "place" we escape to when we need to recharge and find our inspiration.  For me, that place is DisneyWorld!  Walt Disney was the ultimate innovator and being in a physical place that once only existed in his fertile mind is energizing.

One of the things that really hit home for me again this past week was the need to have both "Dreamers" and "Doers" when pursuing innovation.  DisneyWorld is full of examples of dreamers (Imagineers), doers (Cast Members) and combinations of the two.

"Dreamers" are required to develop new ideas, build off old ideas, think big picture, ignore risk and failure, and generally think of what could be.

"Doers" are required to bring the real world to the ideas, develop cost models and risk management strategies, draft business cases, complete design & build work and generally think of what can be.

In thinking this way, I was reminded of Walt Disney's personal creativity/innovation model:
  • Dreamer
    • "What Do I/We Want To Do?"
  • Realist
    • "How Do I/We Want To Do It?"
  • Critic
    • "What Could Go Wrong?"

A great HR strategy to develop innovation within your organization would be to find your best dreamers and doers and pair them up!
